Chiropractic & Pregnancy
What can Chiropractic do for pregnant women? Is it safe for pregnant women? My doctor says I should not go to a Chiropractor when I am pregnant. These are things you may be thinking yourself and I am excited to be able to educate you on them all.
First though, there has been alot of research done on Chiropractic treatments and pregnancy. For some, they can not seem to get pregnant. We can help with that. Some have back pain, leg pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches or allergies that suddenly occur when they go through the pregnancy. We can help with all of those. As an added bonus, Chiropractic has been proven to decrease labor time, making the process a little easier on mom. A great source for research about these topics is www.icpa4kids.org.
Chiropractic care is absolutely safe for a pregnant woman. Because of the hormone relaxin, the mother becomes more flexible and therefore the adjustments are very gentle. Things move into place easier during this time and much relief is felt by the mom. Some Chiropractors may not be comfortable adjusting pregnant women or children. Interview the doctor before getting treated about their comfort and training in this area.
Chiropractic removes interference in the nervous system allowing the body to function at 100%. During pregnancy things are getting bigger and hormones are going crazy. Your body is able to adapt to this rapid change, if it is aligned correctly. Most of us are not in correct alignment and therefore our body has to compensate. It does this because it is designed to survive. With pregnancy in particular, we realign the pelvis so that the pelvic muscles can relax and things can work right. This is how we help breech babies move into position. We do not turn the baby, we remove interference so that the body can do its job.
As far as other healthcare professionals saying to stay away from Chiropractors during pregnancy. They have not been educated about Chiropractic, nor have they undergone the education that Doctors of Chiropractic undergo. A Chiropractor would not recommend a prescription drug to you, because that is out of our scope of practice and we did not learn about that in depth in our training. As, with all things, it is your body and your decision. If having a holistic, natural approach to pregnancy sounds right to you, find a Chiropractor in your area and ask questions. Chiropractic is safe and natural and worth a shot. The worst that can happen is that you will feel better.
