Healthy Holiday Substitutions

There's a lot of food associated with this time of year as much as anything else. We've made it past turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. Now Christmas dinners, office get togethers, New Year's celebrations, and of course College Football Bowl Season brings another list of treats and goodies to snack on. So what are some ways limit the bad stuff in and maintain an at least somewhat healthy diet this year? Try some of these.

1. Plan ahead. If you have parties on the weekend be aware of that and make sure you eat very healthy during the week. This way you'll feel less guilty after eating one unhealthy meal than doing it the whole week.

2. Make an effort at your office to bring healthier snacks. You don't have to totally forego the cookies but be sure to have fruit and veggies around. Than it takes a little self discipline to make sure you actually eat them.

3. Eat a little bit before the party! By simply having a healthy snack or meal before you show up will be able to at least limit the number of desserts and other tempting goodies you might eat. And it will let you enjoy that decadent piece of cake with far less guilt.

4. Don't feel bad about eating at parties. If you've made a conscious effort to eat healthy all week and have been exercising and doing everything else right.....just have fun, eat what you want, and love it.

There's no escaping the high sugar, high fat, totally not good for you foods during the holidays. By just watching what you're eating in between and keeping up with your exercise habits you won't pay for it come New Year's when you're trying to lose the gut. Most importantly, have fun at the parties and skip the guilt. It's life, Live and enjoy it! Happy Holidays from us here at Chiropractic Now!

Flu Adjustment

Have you noticed that all the pharmacies and urgent care facilities are already promoting flu shots? Are you scared of what might happen if you don't get the flu shot? Have you really considered if you actually need the flu shot?

Here is some information regarding the vaccination that you're not told. First, adult vaccinations are still carrying mercury, a highly volatile and deadly chemical. Mercury will kill, yes actually destroy, nervous system cells called neurons. These are the same neurons responsible for controlling heart rate, memory, energy, digestion, and every other process that happens in the body. There really is not a good reason for mercury to still be used. Somehow despite the known detrimental effects of mercury on the body it is still included in many vaccinations. That's scary!

Another fact is that each year, well before flu season, scientists and doctors GUESS which strands will be most commonly affecting the population. They have to choose just 3 strands of the virus out an enormous group potential offenders. One doctor described this as picking a needle out of a haystack. Sure, they may get lucky and pick the correct strand but more often than not a retrospective look has revealed that the flu shot was useless in combating the illness during the most vulnerable months. In fact, many people got the flu directly after getting their flu shot....which of course makes sense since you're injecting the actual virus. And what if you get the flu? Are you miserable for a day or two? Yes, it is awful admittedly. But you struggle through, get it out, the body does its job and you recover fully without ever having taken the risk of injecting toxic chemicals into your body!

Many people are scared into thinking they have to get the flu shot. It's just not true. For some immunocompromised or sick people yes the flu shot may be a good idea since they may lack the immune system strength to adequately defend themselves against the virus. However for most people out there, simply following healthy lifestyle tips can allow their natural defense system to crush any virus or "bug" that tries to wreak havoc in their body. Drinking water, exercising, getting needed vitamins and minerals, eating fruits and veggies and receiving immune boosting chiropractic adjustments will put your health on track to develop an iron immune system capable of handling almost any attack.

Chiropractic & Pregnancy

What can Chiropractic do for pregnant women? Is it safe for pregnant women? My doctor says I should not go to a Chiropractor when I am pregnant. These are things you may be thinking yourself and I am excited to be able to educate you on them all.

First though, there has been alot of research done on Chiropractic treatments and pregnancy. For some, they can not seem to get pregnant. We can help with that. Some have back pain, leg pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches or allergies that suddenly occur when they go through the pregnancy. We can help with all of those. As an added bonus, Chiropractic has been proven to decrease labor time, making the process a little easier on mom. A great source for research about these topics is www.icpa4kids.org.

Chiropractic care is absolutely safe for a pregnant woman. Because of the hormone relaxin, the mother becomes more flexible and therefore the adjustments are very gentle. Things move into place easier during this time and much relief is felt by the mom. Some Chiropractors may not be comfortable adjusting pregnant women or children. Interview the doctor before getting treated about their comfort and training in this area.

Chiropractic removes interference in the nervous system allowing the body to function at 100%. During pregnancy things are getting bigger and hormones are going crazy. Your body is able to adapt to this rapid change, if it is aligned correctly. Most of us are not in correct alignment and therefore our body has to compensate. It does this because it is designed to survive. With pregnancy in particular, we realign the pelvis so that the pelvic muscles can relax and things can work right. This is how we help breech babies move into position. We do not turn the baby, we remove interference so that the body can do its job.

As far as other healthcare professionals saying to stay away from Chiropractors during pregnancy. They have not been educated about Chiropractic, nor have they undergone the education that Doctors of Chiropractic undergo. A Chiropractor would not recommend a prescription drug to you, because that is out of our scope of practice and we did not learn about that in depth in our training. As, with all things, it is your body and your decision. If having a holistic, natural approach to pregnancy sounds right to you, find a Chiropractor in your area and ask questions. Chiropractic is safe and natural and worth a shot. The worst that can happen is that you will feel better.

Dairy = Disease

Have you ever wondered why humans drink another mammal's milk? Or why we are the ONLY species to not only drink anothers milk, but to also drink it into adulthood? If we want to get what cows have shouldn't we eat what cows eat?

Milk is made for one purpose, to nourish a young mammal so that they can grow into a healthy mammal. A cow's milk is designed to make a calf triple in size in one year. Is this why our children are tripling in size at such young ages? Did you know that a cow 50 years ago made 2,000 gallons of milk a year and today that make that much in ONE MONTH?! It's not because they are healthier. It is because they are fed and injected with all kinds of hormones. Then, because they are producing so much more than is natural, they get infections of the udders and are given antibiotics. So, we are getting hormones, pus, blood, and antibiotics in our milk! Gross!!

Hormones - did you know that the average age of puberty in the US is 6-9 years old, but in China (very little dairy consumption) it is 15-19? I think this has alot to do with the "3 glasses a day" Americans are committed to drinking. And because girls are developing younger and are getting more estrogen in their diets their skeletal system is not getting to mature properly and they are exposed to increased levels of estrogen for longer time periods than the body is designed to deal with, ie breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis are huge problems.

Drinking milk increases the risk of cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, allergies, ADD, etc. The list goes on and on.

If milk is something you can not live without, try hemp milk, almond milk or rice milk. Soy is not recommended because of the estrogen levels and many people have allergies to soy. In fact, if you are allergic to milk you are probably allergic to soy. Also, try rice or almond cheeses. Stay away from yogurt, but give raw, organic kefir a try.

IF you think you might be allergic to milk, stay off of it for a week (and any dairy products). Then try it for a day or two and notice how you feel. Common signs are digestive problems: gassy, bloated, diarrhea, constipation; bags or dark circles under the eyes, headaches, mood changes, etc.

Life without dairy is not only possible, it's necessary!
